Data Impact
Programmatic approaches for project development guidance

Policy-relevant analysis

Conduct data analyses using existing data sources to characterize a health problem; identify policy options that address the root causes of the problem, use health impact assessment and economic evaluation methods to assess the cost-effectiveness and feasibility of policy options, evaluate policies and programs; persuasively communicate policy recommendations to stakeholders and decision-makers. For example, this could include a series of workshops to provide dedicated time for conducting the analysis needed to produce a policy brief or similar product. Proposals may also include stakeholder engagement meetings and dissemination events. If required, the proposal may include capacity building on relevant topics such as health impact assessment or decision modeling. Examples of completed work include a training program to conduct specific analysis in support of a smoke-free legislation and motor-cycle helmet regulations.

Data reports to inform decision-making

Develop public health reports using existing routine health, vital statistics or other relevant data to communicate population health information to a particular audience and to identify gaps in current health strategies, measure and evaluate progress towards health goals, and illustrate where action is needed. An example includes an analysis of mortality data and publishing a report which provides evidence for new policies such as expanding pneumococcal vaccine use or increased screening for cervical and breast cancer.

National health bulletin development or enhancement

Develop an authoritative, timely, and influential source of information and recommendations for actions to protect the public’s health.

Scientific communications development

Increase staff technical capacity to write and publish scientific manuscripts.

Digital solutions for decision-making

Present key data to decision-makers on a specific public health topic or disease using platforms, such as a dashboard, that integrates and visualizes data to understand and monitor the status of the public health topic or disease and to take action using this information. Examples have included performance monitoring dashboards with workshops to engage relevant stakeholders in their use.
